the snake

~ guardian of unawakened magic & creative potential ~

The snake is a symbol of our highest potential. It is said that shakti (our creative life force) lies dormant at the base of our spine, in the form of a coiled snake. Regardless of whether this image rings true for you, it's well worth considering the amount of "unawakened" or "untapped'" potential within. What would life look like if you woke it up? How can you stir it from slumber? An experienced yoga or meditation teacher can lead the way. Make haste the snake card appears when there is no more time to waste.

when in balance ~ prosperous, creative, charismatic

when out of balance ~ starts and stops many things

to bring into balance ~ Kundalini yoga, meditation

the wild unknown card deck

Hi friends! :) Welcome to week 31 of our yoga series - exploring this life through the symbolism of the animal kingdom. Each creature represents a different aspect of our human journey, helping us to better understand and connect to our inner and outer worlds. Every 5 weeks in our yoga classes, we cycle through each of the 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) and their respective animals in this card deck. How can we bring each of the animals within us into balance?

Last week, the unicorn directed us toward the questioning and exploration of life expanded beyond our day to day... beyond our conditioning... beyond what we can see. We became sensitive to the powers that lie in the invisible places we can't experience through our 5 senses. We began to settle into the subtle aspects of our body and mind... the subtleties of the energies all around... what do you believe?

This week, we begin our seventh cycle of the elements with the snake. This animal belongs to the earth element, which represents our relationships with fears and habits. The snake sleeps coiled at the base of our spine. There is no more time to waste. The snake calls us to awaken our untapped potential and creative energies. This is the sign to stir this creature from its slumber -- rise. We need you, the journey starts now.

To dive into the snake card, I'm going to share how I'm personally experiencing the snake energy, and perhaps my story will speak to or resonate to yours.

I received a message that this year of my life is bringing forth a great shift. This shift is demanding that I shed and release the old patterns and energies that are keeping my own snake coiled and asleep. I have become sharply aware that my snake energy needs to wake up now. The time is now -- I can't wait any longer. My dharma, my purpose, requires me to show up with my creative energies fully untangled. My unresolved heavy karmas, samskaras, conditioning, grief, doubts, pain, and misaligned beliefs create a deep knot, a thick blockage to my prana... my life force energy. This block makes me feel restricted and trapped, unable to show up in the way that I know I could. As if my life and my potential is on the other side of a pane of glass, and I am just standing with my hands against the barrier, longing to shatter the separation, but unsure how to.

The card's description states that our snake energy is unbalanced when we start and stop many things. Are there habits or old beliefs that you often push away or disregard? But deep down we know that those are the very things that keep the snake bound in its coil. To awaken the snake, we must first recognize that something is sleeping. We must foresee and feel the magic that will result from waking up the snake. We must long for that awakening -- knowing that it is calling for us, that it is the next necessary step for our unique life path. We must devote ourselves to our awakening... with commitment and discipline. I must fully devote myself, with love, to the necessary steps and habits, and the shedding of old fears, that are vital for this great shift... the great doorway I must walk through requires this.

What energy may be unleashed as the snake uncoils and begins to climb up the spine? With its uncoiling, the snake pierces through and devours the blockages along our central channel. As it rises, we become clear and uninhibited. We become empty, so that divinity can fully express itself through us.

A theme that has been continuously surfacing for me is the metaphor of Krishna's flute. Krishna is a manifestation of pure love and joyous play. He symbolizes what it is to be absolutely devoted and a living embodiment of his devotion to divinity. Krishna holds his instrument to his lips and says, "Empty me, so that your song can play through me."

A flute must be hollow in order for it to play music. Just as we must be clear in order for us to express our song, our dance, our dharma. The more we can empty ourselves, as we allow the snake to ascend, symbolizing the rise of the kundalini energy, the more we show up in every moment more authentic, more aligned, more in love with all things.

May we bring our focus to the sleeping snake at our base, and ask him to open his eyes, ask him to clear our lives of the old gunk that keeps us stuck and stagnant. This cycle is over. The new is here. Because the world needs you... and you need you.

Step into your fullness. Step into your power. Honor the potential that calls you.

Not by taking on more, but by offering all that you hold into the jaws of the snake. Becoming empty, so that your highest self can shine forth in your full luminosity.

...

Next week, the oyster of the water element holds precious gifts within. When we experience doubt, we can withdraw and guard our dreams and treasures. The oyster asks us to reveal and shine our power unto the world.

til next time ✌︎

dream extreme!
